Back of the (inter) net!

Okay, the football season is over and there's nothing to do until pre-season training starts. So I thought I would launch a new feature about what Mellor FC players get up to during the summer, culled from the internet. Let's start with Paul Goodwin, who is worried that he has allowed the home he shares with partner Jo to get a bit grimy while she's away. His dilemma reminded me of the old Yellow Pages commercial. He appealed on Facebook for help to clean it up. But I reckon Poj should do a Mr Muscle and clean it himself. If you have an item for Back of the (inter) net, let me know.

Meanwhile Mellor's flying winger Matt Peck managed to meet up with Manchester United star Federico Macheda in a London hotel before the European Champions League Final at Wembley.

Also at the game was former Mellor FC player Rory Harrison.

Whitehead Cup Win

Mellor won the Whitehead Cup for the second time in three seasons on Wednesday May 5th when they beat Chorltonians 3-0 at Trafford FC. It was Mellor's third Cup Final victory over Chorlts teams in three years too, all at the same venue and all without conceding a goal. Centre back and Man of the Match Mat Molden led the way with a thunderous drive from 18 yards on 11 minutes to give Mellor a half time lead. A delicate, glancing Ian Arnfield header from six yards to a Nick Entwistle cross a minute after the break made it 2-0 and sub Steve Baguley scored with almost his first touch to complete the rout on 87 minutes after good work from Sam Parker. Stand-in keeper Immy Roberts made two incredible saves very late on to deny Chorlts a consolation goal. A full match report and more photographs will appear on Mellor's website www.mellorfc.com. Congratulations to management team Gary Brown and Adam Axford whose side conceded just one goal in four matches in its successful cup run.

Mellor FC Reunion

This Saturday, May 7th, will see a special reunion of Mellor FC players and officials. The idea came about a few months ago when various players, mainly from Mellor FC's golden era of 1985-87 began corresponding on Facebook. However, since then, other ex-players have been in touch and all are welcome to the gathering at the Marple Tavern, Cross Lane, Marple, SK6 6DJ at around 6pm. Among those coming are many of the people on the photograph displayed. This picture was taken after one of Mellor's two consecutive Rhodes Cup Final victories.  Former manager Stu Lindsay and Gary Williams, however, cannot come and nor can Roy Purlan, whose plan to travel from his home in Cornwall has sadly been disrupted. If you are in the West Country, incidentally, you may want to stay at Roy's guesthouseDave Garnett is also unavailable and we have been unable to trace Martin Jackson. But there will be plenty of memories shared over a few pints and a curry.
